History
It was 1937 when Durga Bai Deshmukh College of Special Education (DBDCE) began in Nagpur, India. The college was established by Shri Sadashivrao Deshmukh and his wife Lakshmibai Sadashivrao Deshmukh as a centre for giving support to children with special needs.
The college primarily provided vocational education through a number of specialized courses aiming to equip the educated youth with the toolsets required for a decent living. It was said that the couple were inspired by the efforts of one such disabled student, who strived hard to make ends meet against all odds irrespective of societal rejection.
This approach of giving a fair chance to differently-abled citizens was adopted not just in India but even across organizations in other countries.
Since its establishment, DBDCE has grown into an institute equipped with all the necessary skills and resources for modern-day existence. Today, it offers several Full Time & Distance Learning Courses like Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education (B.Ed.), Master’s in Special Education (M.Ed.), Diploma & Certificate Programmes and Post Graduate Diploma in Inclusive Education (PGDIE). Moreover, the college also provides internship and Placement Opportunities for students from different backgrounds interested in pursuing their dreams without worrying about financial difficulties or disability challenges.
For over 80 years now, DBDCE has been contributing towards raising awareness about disability rights among individuals from different walks of life and has gained international healthcare accreditations/recognitions including World Health Organization’s (WHO) certification labelled ‘Center of Excellence’ making it one of the most renowned institutes concerning special education worldwide.
