History
Jesus and Mary College is a constituent college of the University of Delhi, located in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi. The college was founded by the Congregation of Jesus and Mary in 1968 by merging two of its schools—Sacred Heart School (est. 1941) and St. Columba’s (est. 1940). In 1971, it started offering undergraduate degrees in arts and sciences affiliated to the University of Delhi. It also started to offer postgraduate degrees in 1973, when the Zoology Department was established.
In keeping with its motto “Ut Omnes Unum Sint” (“That all may be one”), the college initially offered only science courses for women students but began introducing other courses over time, such as BCom (1971), BA in Political Science & Psychology (1976), BA (Hons.) in English (1977), MA in English (1981), MSc in Chemistry and Physics (1984) and BSc Hons. In Economics (1991).
Today, Jesus and Mary College offer many postgraduates as well as undergraduate courses ranging from humanities, and social sciences to natural sciences like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Bio-Science disciplines. Apart from curricular studies, there are a variety of co-curricular activities available within the college such as debates, seminars, theatre plays etc., which are organized throughout the year by various student societies like Kalpana Chawla Society for Women Empowerment or The Debating Society etc.. There is also an annual inter-college cultural festival called LaFiesta – South Asian Cultural Festival that brings together several colleges from all over India with hundreds of participants every year.
The college also provides several facilities for students’ housing including hostel accommodation for around 300 girls admitted into resident Colleges/Universities apart from Jesus & Mary College as well as a few spacious flats which mostly have been used by foreign students visiting India on academic pursuits or internships hosted by the college through its Foundation Courses Programmes run in partnership with different universities from all around the world such as National University Singapore, KU Leuven Belgium etc.
In recent years the college has expanded even further having secured affiliation with IGNOU under which it now runs several courses granting degrees equivalent to UGC-recognised graduate diplomas/degrees along with certificates/certified diplomas aimed at providing additional educational qualifications to already existing graduates thus allowing them to add better value to their degree.
Best Practices
- Respect and value fellow students and college staff: All students must show respect for their peers, faculty members, and any other people inside the college premises, in order to create a respectful, inclusive environment.
- Show commitment to your studies: Students should ensure they’re focused on their studies by participating in classes, engaging in course readings, completing research relevant to their major/field of study and engaging with professors.
- Abide by all rules that are applicable within the college ground: Always follow the codes of conduct specified by the college administration, in order to ensure safety and fairness throughout the campus.
- Lead a healthy lifestyle: Health and well-being should be of utmost importance while staying at college; encourage students to maintain good diet habits and partake in physical activities such as sports or workout sessions regularly during their academic journey.
- Stick to ethical manners & values: Ethics contribute greatly to an individual’s overall personal development; integrity should be demonstrated by all members present on campus. Further, never engage in inappropriate activities which may result in disciplinary action being taken against you or your classmates.
- Acknowledge cultural differences: Recognizing diverse cultures is essential when studying abroad; familiarising yourself with different traditions can make you more tolerant towards foreign communities and support your social acceptance amongst them.
