- Foster in students a sense of empathy and concern for the differently abled and less privileged, encouraging them to champion environmental causes and emerge as responsible global citizens.
- Cultivate diversity, ethical principles, and leadership qualities, while establishing a vibrant learning environment that includes a wealth of extracurricular and community engagement activities, aimed at enhancing the learning journey and catalysing a transformative shift in the world.
History of Dyal Singh College
Dyal Singh College, established in 1959, holds the distinction of being one of India’s oldest educational institutions. It operates under an autonomous society affiliated with the Ministry of HRD. The visionary behind its inception was Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a prominent personality in 19th-century Punjab. His focus on modern education and philanthropy led to the college’s founding.
The origins of the Dyal Singh College trace back to a pivotal meeting in Lahore on May 22, 1910. Five notable Sikh figures, including Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Sunder Singh Majithia, gathered to discuss establishing a college. Their vision was to blend Western liberal arts with a Khalsa educational emphasis, offering instruction in both English and Punjabi.
The Dyal Singh College initially operated in Ludhiana until 1941 when it relocated to its dedicated premises on Mall Road, Lahore. The college’s journey was influenced by the partition of India, prompting moves to Meerut in 1948 and then back to Ludhiana in April 1949. Eventually, the college settled in Kapurthala (formerly Sansarpur Khurd, near Jalandhar).
In 1940-41, Dyal Singh College affiliated with Punjab University. Notably, in 1952, renowned social worker Babu Jagjivan Ram inaugurated Dyal Singh Library at the Kapurthala campus. His advocacy led to state government affiliation for courses like B.A., B.Com, and other professional fields.
1963 marked a significant milestone with the foundation stone laid by Dr. S Radhakrishnan for the Delhi-based Dyal Singh College campus. This campus, overseeing locations in Karnal and Palwal besides Delhi, has been operational since 1996. It houses departments such as Commerce and Arts, and it began offering hostel accommodations for male students in 2000.
Additionally, the Ajitgarh campus (now Mohali), established in 1988, propelled the growth plan endorsed by the Board. This plan aimed to expand the college’s capacity and infrastructure, including an auditorium, gymnasium, seminar hall, and girls’ hostels. Today, the college holds a place among India’s 15 central universities.
With an eye toward modern education, Dyal Singh College seeks recognition from the UGC for rolling distance learning modules. These collaborative efforts span campuses in Karnal, Palwal, and Delhi. This innovative approach empowers students to shape their careers by selecting subjects aligned with their study materials.
The online exam system, designed to accommodate real-world academic and examination needs, adheres to academic governance norms prescribed by the institution.
