About English Literary Association of Aryabhatta College
‘English Literary Association’ or ELA, as it is popularly known, is the society under whose aegis the activities of the English department are hosted. Composed of student and faculty members, it has three posts namely, President, Secretary and Treasurer in the lead roles with an executive team of students, and a department faculty member as mentor known as ‘Seminar-In-charge’. In order to provide equal opportunity to all members, the students are elected to the respective ELA posts through the democratic process of elections. The Seminar-in-charge is appointed on rotational basis for a term of one year.
Since its inception, the department has hosted a number of activities ranging from workshops, national & international seminars, UGC sponsored conferences & field trips apart from the Freshers and the Farewell. Calypso, started in 2016, is the banner under which the society hosts its annual Literary Festival that is eagerly sought after by one and all. A national/international conference is an event earmarked on society’s calendar every year. A quick glance at the list of resource persons and international connections reflects the remarkable success and the growth of the society. The society events have been graced by international luminaries and award winning authors like Tabish Khair (Aarhus University), Janice Pariat (Sahitya Academy Awardee), Siddharth Pandey (Fellow in Global History, LUMS, Munich, Yale) among others. The society has thereby been functional in forging international alliances with institutions of great repute such as Ashoka University, Virginia Tech to name a few.
In what adds a flourish to the society, is the ‘Special Lecture Series’, an initiative of the English department that works to forge interdisciplinarity and greater accessibility and knowledge resource sharing. The society also has a number of events in its pipeline that shall add to the existing bouquet of academic practices that ELA has successfully conducted so far. The ELA has also an active social media presence.
