As Delhi University is one of the colleges where each year thousands of students apply and take admissions. And these Students come to study here from different states all over the country and even from abroad. So to cater to the problem of accommodation for students coming from Outstation, Delhi University does provide hostel facilities for both males and females. The hostels at Delhi University offer various amenities such as rooms, dining facilities, common areas, recreational facilities, and security services.
But since the number of students applying for hostel facilities is a lot more than the number of seats available in a hostel that is, the demand for hostel accommodation is usually very high, so as the number of seats in colleges is limited, similar is the case with hostel seats. And hence hostel facilities are allotted to students based on the DU hostel allotment process which considers merit.
Delhi University has a total of 18 hostels, which are located in both North and South Campus. Each of these hostels in Delhi University has an Admission Committee and seats are allotted to students based on their scores i.e., merit and subject to availability of seats. The merit list is prepared by the college/department concerned, based on the student’s performance in the entrance exam and/or the best four subjects in the 12th board exams.
So it is not necessary that a student who has got a seat in a regular college will also get a seat in the hostel. There are separate lists released for the students getting hotels.
Students normally have to apply for hostels at Delhi University at the time of admission only.
And different hostels in Delhi University have different procedures for that, but normally it starts with filling hostel form which you will be able to get from its website normally that form costs anywhere around 150 rupees.
Initially, hostels in Delhi University are allotted based on merit score and then some remaining seats are allotted based on the caste of the person applying i.e., SC, ST, etc. The exact numbers are:
15% – Reserved for SC
7.5% – Reserved for ST
3% – For Pwd
