About Sashakt (Society for Women’s Empowerment) of ANDC
In India, gender-based discrimination has been a deep-rooted social malice since long. Addressing this sensitive issue has been a long drawn battle against powerful structural and male-biased forces of the society. Though women constitute nearly 50% of our population yet they lag behind in exposure to equal opportunities for their comprehensive personality development through education, sports and even career options, to name a few. This is in contradiction to the principle of gender equality protected in the Indian Constitution in its Preamble; Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Directive Principles. The constitution not only grants equality to women but also empowers the state to adopt measures of positive discrimination in favour of women. Consequently, women’s empowerment is one of the key factors in determining the success of development in the status and position of women in the society. The college took an initiative on women’s empowerment, realizing that it was all about making focussed efforts towards not just physical or psychological but complete personality development involving medical counselling, sex education and laws on women’s rights, etc. To fulfil this objective, a society named ‘Sashakt’ was set up in 2003 with an aim towards the welfare and development of the female students and faculty members by providing equal rights and opportunities; and a platform for growth, ensuring their progress.
