History of Shri Ram College of Commerce

Shri Ram College of Commerce, commonly known as SRCC, is a premier college in India located on the North Campus of the University of Delhi. It was founded in 1920 by industrialist and philanthropist, Sir Lala Shri Ram.

Initially affiliated with Punjab University and then with the University of Delhi, it has now become one of the top commerce colleges in India, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

In 1924, it shifted to its present premises in the newly constructed Alexandra Mansion at Kingsway Camp near Kashmiri Gate. Its first principal was Mr Gokul Chand Narang and during Lala Shri Ram’s time (1924-1946), the institution established itself as a centre for learning traditional commerce subjects such as Costing and Accountancy.

By 1946, SRCC had earned a reputation for producing top students who passed their examinations without fail or distinction, with flying colours. This led to increasing demand from students seeking admission into this college from across India and overseas. 

By the 1950s, the college included external studies in its repertoire. During this time various post-graduation diploma programs were introduced including Business Administration (MBA) which became highly popular amongst Indian youth, then called ‘Management Studies’ and Master of Commerce (M.Com).

With this, SRCC had transcended beyond traditional academia to strengthen its teaching methods that imparted management skills along with hands-on experience required in modern economic scenarios.

At present, the college offers over 25 specialised professional degrees across four faculties namely the Faculty of Commerce & Business Studies, Faculty Of Social Science & Performing Arts, Faculty Of Science & Computer Science And Faculty Of Humanities & Languages respectively.

In pursuit of its vision to provide quality education to every student joining SRCC, the institution undertook massive modernization projects throughout the 2000s which witnessed the introduction of state-of-the-art infrastructure accompanied by digital classrooms equipped with modern IT equipment and internet facilities that kept students abreast with the latest global trends in academics making them industry ready upon graduation from SRCC.

Adjacent to the main academic block, the SRCC Library is a two-story, centrally air-conditioned, and Wi-Fi-enabled facility with seating for around 300 readers across two floors.

Utilising cutting-edge library sciences technology, the SRCC Library maintains a well-stocked collection of over eighty thousand volumes spanning various subjects, continually updating with the latest publications in business, economics, humanities, and social sciences to cater to students’ diverse academic needs. The library is fully automated and offers user services through computers.

The library subscribes to over eighty prestigious national and international journals, including Accountancy, Accounting Review, American Economic Review, Economic and Political Weekly, and more. It also provides access to prominent national newspapers and magazines like Business India, Business Today, Outlook, and others.

Notably, the SRCC Library houses the SRCC Enabling Unit, which includes a Resource Center for Visually Impaired Students (RCVC). Additionally, the first floor of the College Library hosts the SRCC Archival Unit, chronicling the college’s history and significant events.

• Auditorium

The SRCC auditorium boasts a seating capacity of approximately 750 people and is extensively used for extracurricular events and college functions such as the annual day.

Equipped with advanced lighting and sound systems, it features a large stage, two green rooms, comfortable seating, carpeting, wall panelling for acoustic effects, air-conditioning, washrooms, lockers, and a podium.

• Seminar Room

Constructed on the occasion of the College’s Platinum Jubilee in 2000–2001, the Platinum Jubilee Seminar Room is air-conditioned with a seating capacity of around one hundred people. It is equipped with audio-visual systems, including recording facilities, projector screens, whiteboards, blackboards, and a podium.

The Seminar Room plays a vital role in hosting important co-curricular and extra-curricular events such as guest lectures, group discussions, international programs, speaker sessions, seminars, and symposia, among others.

Health Infrastructure

• Basic Health Care Unit (BHCU)

Our institution houses a Basic Health Care Unit (BHCU) within the Sports Complex, dedicated to providing immediate medical assistance to students and staff members in need. The BHCU is equipped with essential medical facilities, including a visiting doctor who attends the campus three times a week, a physiotherapist, and a full-time nurse.

• Fitness Center/Gymnasium

For promoting physical fitness and well-being, the College maintains its fitness centre and gymnasium, also located within the Sports Complex. This facility offers a wide range of exercise options, such as free weight exercises, bodyweight exercises, gym ball exercises (Swiss ball exercises), resistance band exercises, resistance machine exercises, and stretching exercises. Additionally, the fitness centre hosts classes for kickboxing, yoga, and aerobics. It is divided into two sections:

1. Weight Training Section

This area is equipped with Olympic weightlifting weights, exercise stations, Swiss balls, and more.

2. Cardio Section

Here, you’ll find cardio exercise equipment like treadmills, elliptical trainers, and stationary cycles.

• Physiotherapy Unit (PU)

The college has established a dedicated Physiotherapy Unit at the Sports Complex, catering to the needs of both students and staff. The Physiotherapy Unit comprises an Electrotherapy room and an Exercise Therapy room. The Electrotherapy room features various physiotherapy modalities, including IFT (Interferential Therapy), ultrasound (US), TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), Muscle Stimulator, SWD (Shortwave Diathermy), Traction Machine, wax bath therapy, and hydro collator, all aimed at pain relief and relaxation.

Meanwhile, the Exercise Therapy room is equipped with basic exercise equipment such as the Shoulder Wheel, Wrist Exerciser, Ankle Exerciser, and Foot Exerciser, as well as specialised equipment for sports enthusiasts, including resistance bands, Swiss Balls, Foam Rollers, Bosu Balls, Medicine Balls, and Weight Cuffs. Additionally, there is an RIP-60 trainer available for supervised rehabilitation and training. A visiting physiotherapist is attached to the unit and is accessible during College hours.

Residential Infrastructure

• Boys Hostel

The College offers an in-campus Boys Hostel designed to accommodate male students hailing from various parts of the country and around the world. The Boys Hostel can house up to 150 students, with allocations based on different semesters and courses offered by the College. The hostel is divided into two blocks and provides essential amenities, including Wi-Fi connectivity, furnished rooms, a separate dining hall, a common room, and well-maintained lawns.

• Girls Hostel

Similarly, we provide an in-campus Girls Hostel catering to female students from diverse geographical backgrounds. The Girls Hostel accommodates up to 50 students, with allocations based on different semesters and courses offered by the College. This fully Wi-Fi-enabled hostel offers furnished rooms, a separate dining hall, a common room, and adjacent lawns for a comfortable and secure living environment.

• Sports Complex

The College takes pride in its state-of-the-art international standard multipurpose indoor sports stadium, with a seating capacity of approximately 1200 spectators. The wooden-planked courts within the stadium are versatile, serving various sports such as Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Judo, Wrestling, and more. 

Additionally, there are dedicated rooms for chess and table tennis. We also boast a hockey cum football field. For over two decades, our College has excelled in sports, organising annual events like the Sports Carnival, Inter-class matches, and Sports Day.

They offer coaching facilities for different games, and our teams actively participate in Cricket, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Handball, Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Squash Racket, Swimming, Shooting, and Athletics.

We maintain three state-of-the-art Computer Labs, each equipped with the latest software and hardware.
