History
The Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, one of the foremost chest research and teaching institutes in India and a constituent college of the University of Delhi (DU), was established in 1949 by an Act of Parliament. The institute was set up with the vision to determine ways to control tuberculosis & other lung diseases, conduct research and provide training to medical personnel in the field of chest diseases.
The founding chairman of the institute, Dr. KD Tripathi, started a small 25-bed hospital at Kingsway Camp on 18th February 1949 with no resources at hand and basic equipment in place. Despite this humble beginning, within six months it acquired a larger set-up with 125 beds. Also, that same year in August, it received recognition from World Health Organization (WHO) for its tuberculosis research work.
During 1950-1960 the institute witnessed tremendous growth which included the inauguration of additional departments such as radiotherapy and the establishment of laboratories like cytology, pathology and bacteriology among others. In 1960s a specialization department such as paediatric radiology was also initiated to foster various subspecialties related to chest care. Also, during this time, faculty members also conducted Epidemiologic studies into pulmonary diseases across various parts of Delhi as well as other regions like Punjab and Himachal Pradesh; thereby laying the foundation for future research work by institutes around the country.
Throughout the next 3 decades i.e. 70’s & 80’s there were several milestones achieved which led the institute towards becoming a premier centre for Chest Diseases & Allied Subjects which contributed significantly towards clinical diagnostics & treatment apart from inculcating knowledge among clinicians & academicians alike through teaching programs & conferences. Perhaps the most remarkable achievement during this period was when in 1980 National Science Academy awarded the awardee gold medal to the Head of the Pediatrics section Dr Arun Shukla for lifetime commitment towards TB Control Programmes throughout India.
Most recently during the 2014-16 academic year, the Institute hosted two International Conferences viz IASLC India Stakeholders Meeting 2015 & India Pulmonology – Depuy Symposium 2016 wherein not only renowned international faculties’ enlightened participants, but also opportunities were given to ardent enthusiasts who had presented their Research Findings too . Inculcating Golden Robes given by WHO in 1949, VPCI laid its legacy Nationwide having Centres among cities like Bangalore, Bhopal etc apart from pan-Indian services offered under Rural Health Services Programme benefited unto over 150 villages benefitting thousands solely due Viceregal leadership or Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI).
