History
Zakir Husain Delhi College was established in 1969 as part of the University of Delhi. Named after India’s first Muslim President Zakir Husain, its main goal is to provide higher education to people from deprived backgrounds. It is one of the largest colleges situated in the North East region of Delhi and offers courses ranging from humanities, sciences, commerce, and computer science streams at the undergraduate level. The college also provides postgraduate diplomas and certificates apart from research programmes like PhD and MPhil in various fields.
The college has been extremely progressive in providing co-curricular activities such as sports, NCC, NSS and other clubs to its students. It also has a special department created for development research studies ‘The Centre For Development Studies’ which encourages research on development policies focused on empowering marginalized communities socially and economically – an indication towards its profound commitment towards social justice.
In 2005 Zakir Husain Delhi College received an A rating by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) which is yet another confirmation of its standard of excellence achieved since its inception over fifty years ago. Today it stands tall as a beacon of good education catering to students from deprived backgrounds with compassion but diligence, instilling knowledge within.
Best Practices
- Ensure Proper Preparation: Every student should be adequately prepared and knowledgeable about the topics they are discussing in the classroom. This includes doing research, studying textbooks, and preparing presentations or projects.
- Encourage Interaction Among Students: Create a classroom environment that encourages an exchange of ideas among students. Creating activities or opportunities for collaboration can increase engagement while also providing educational benefits, such as learning to share thoughts and opinions respectfully with others.
- Promote Active Learning: Create hands-on activities and projects that encourage students to actively engage in the learning process instead of just listening to lectures or passively participating in class discussions.
- Make Use of Technology: Utilizing technology such as computers, projectors, iPads, etc., can provide valuable new ways for students to learn and interact with one another in the classroom.
- Encourage Constructive Feedback: Schedule feedback sessions with individual students or create group discussion forums for students to give feedback on what is working in the class, what needs improvement and any other topics related to their education experience at Zakir Husain Delhi College.
